An email from Scott Birdsong

Here is an email, we just got from our very good friend Scott Birdsong, Laurell, Maryland.

Poul, Kirsten, Andreas,

We received your email last evening late, and were very interested in hearing more about your adventures in CA.
We hadn’t heard about Morro Bay before but I was interested this morning to read a little on the web about it.
The US really does have some wonderful scenery and both our National and State Park systems are certainly a treasure. There are also National and State Forests that also offer a wonderful preserve of natural resources.

Lynn and I are so happy that you all are having this chance to tour the CA coastal area; and of course that Andreas is having the chance to live, study, and research at one of our prominent centers of learning.
The US is indeed a beautiful, diverse, wonderful, and BIG place (how many
Denmarks could fit between the Mississippi and the Pacific?)! Many years
ago Lynn and I traveled a few times from DC to the Pacific Northwest
(Seattle area) by train. It was a three night, four day travel adventure
one way. I can remember watching out the rear of the train and thinking
how so very vast our country is– and of course we could eat a McDonald’s
hamburger at DC Union Station and find the exact same franchise on a
corner in Seattle near King Street Station–and place the orders in a
common language and pay with a common currency. So far away, but linked
by language [for the most part! :-)], a shared culture [again for the most
part, but in the end the melting pot carries the day], and of course
commerce! Such a place!

Yes, we woke up this morning to the news of Mr. Bin Laden’s being
killed. It obviously had to end this way and something that had to be
done sooner or later. It’s hard to be overly excited though (and
inappropriate) or to show too much joy since the backdrop of terrorism
remains and the US has a lot of reputational repair work in parts of the
world to take care of. I was sorry to see American citizens rallying at
the White House and treating the matter as if our team had just won a
football game– not appropriate at all, although I can understand their
sentiments. I do suppose justice was served.

We’ve been following your travel pictures on the blog. Keep us up
to date and enjoy your time here!

Best regards,

Scott
